Dundee band going to Florida
Dundee High School’s band is going to Florida for a week. While in Florida, the band will perform at Disneyworld.
“We’re not going over spring break, but our week will include Presidents Day, so we’ll miss less school,” said band director Melissa Moore.
The Vikings will perform as a concert band and also will take part in a clinic on sight-reading music. The students will have a chance to learn what it’s like to be a professional studio musician. The trip will give them a chance to explore different musical career paths.
Band members held several fundraisers and earned almost enough money to pay for the students’ trip. They will have to contribute toward the trip with their own money, but not very much. Fundraisers included car washes, bake sales and bottle drives, among other activities.
At Disneyworld, the Vikings will perform music that they played at last year’s band festival. They will also play favorite music from past performances in order to have enough material for a concert.
To be eligible to play at Disneyworld, the band had to send in a video audition from last year’s festival, and a photograph of them in their uniforms.
“We get lots of compliments on our uniforms,” said Ms. Moore. “We keep them really clean and well maintained.”
The students are very excited about going on the trip. While in Orlando, the band members will get to visit three different theme parks. They will be staying in St. Cloud.
“This is the first time we have been on a trip that is this involved,” said Ms. Moore. “We have performed at Cedar Point, but nothing like this. It’s been about 10 years since the band did something this big.”
There are 27 students planning to make the trip, which is most of the band. The band has more than 30 members.
In the meantime, the band is getting ready for the solo and ensemble festival, to be held in Livonia on Saturday, Jan. 31.
