Dundee wrestlers claim fifth State crown
Dundee High School’s wrestling team won its fifth State wrestling crown in seven years, at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek on Saturday, March 3.

The Vikings defeated Carson City Crystal for the Division IV State Wrestling Championship, with an overwhelming score of 47-13.

Earlier in the day, Dundee defeated its nemesis Whittmore-Prescott with a score of 39-21. That match came down to the final pairing, when Jarred Barnes pinned his heavyweight opponent.

Whittmore-Prescott had spoiled Dundee’s run for the championship for the past two years, breaking a string of four consecutive State championships.

On Friday, March 2, Dundee defeated Springport in the quarter-finals with a score of 34-24.

Fellow Monroe County teams Ida and Bedford also made it to the State meet. Bedford became the Division I State Champion.

Ida, which was in its first-ever State tournament, was eliminated in the quarterfinals in a controversial and very close match.

Both Dundee and Bedford were honored with a “Welcome Home” parade through downtown Dundee on Saturday night, followed by a victory celebration held at Dundee High School.

Wrestlers also were honored on Monday, March 5 during a special assembly at Dundee High School.
