Dundee honored for good sportsmanship
Dundee High School was honored with the “Good Sports are Winners” sportsmanship award from the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

The award was given for the good behavior of the team, coaches and fans during the Team Dual Wrestling Finals at Battle Creek in March.

“Of the 32 teams at the event, Dundee was the only school selected to receive this award,” said Charles J. Schankin, principal of Dundee High School.

A presentation of the commemmorative good sportsmanship banner for the gymnasium, a crystal trophy, and a $1,000 donation to the wrestling program was made at the Dundee Community Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday, May 14 in the high school library.

John Johnson represented the Michigan High School Athletic Association at the meeting and made the presentations.

The $1,000 donation to the wrestling program was made by Little Caesar’s Pizza, which sponsors the award.
“It’s special to win a state title,” said Tom Williams, DHS Athletic Director. “It is also special to win a state sportsmanship award. It says volumes about our athletes, parents, coaches and fans that we can do both in the same year— for the second time.”

Mr. Johnson congratulated Dundee High School for having won the award five years after it won it the first time.

“This time, it was won by a whole new generation of wrestlers and students,” said Mr. Johnson. He added that the MHSAA has not been able to give out the award for the last five years, until Little Caesar’s stepped up to sponsor the award.
