Dundee youth killed in car accident
Daniel Haddix, a 15-year-old Dundee High School freshman, was fatally injured in a single car accident on Monday, May 10.

He was the son of Duane and Dawn (Turner) Haddix of Dundee, and was born on Dec. 31, 1988 in Toledo, Ohio.

Visitation times were set for 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12 and noon to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 13 at Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe. On Friday, May 14, he is to lie in state at 10 a.m. at Monroe Missionary Baptist Church until services at 11 a.m. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Roy Southerland. Burial will follow at Rath Cemetery, Monroe.

He was a member of the junior varsity football team, and had made a substantial recovery from a serious injury sustained during practice in the fall.

He also was employed by River Raisin Canoe Livery. He was a lifeguard, certified in CPR and first aid. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and snowmobiler. He loved water, swimming and playing paintball.

He is survived by a brother, Duane Haddix II at home; grandparents Sylvia and Paul Turner of Dundee; and William and Sue Haddix of Monroe.

He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Audrey Haddix.

The crash occurred on Dixon Road, about one-tenth of a mile east of Alford Road in Dundee Township.

A preliminary investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office revealed that Duane (Duey) K. Haddix II, 17 years old and a high school junior, was driving. The brothers were on their way to school at about 7:50 a.m. in a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, westbound on Dixon Road. They were the only two people in the vehicle.

As the car entered a curve in the roadway, it left the right side of the road and entered a slight ditch. The driver was able to bring the car back onto the roadway; however, he lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle began to slide sideways and left the road on the left side. The vehicle entered a ditch and rolled over; struck a tree, and came to rest, said sheriff deputies.

Daniel Haddix was dead at the scene. Duey Haddix was able to crawl out of the wreckage and was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital by Hart Ambulance. Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies and the Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy Randy Sehl and Dundee High School Principal Jacqueline Schultz were notified of the accident immediately, and went to the scene.

Dep. Sehl, who is the Dundee Community Schools liaison officer, said Duey Haddix’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

High school staff members were notified of Dan Haddix’s death privately, and then Mrs. Schultz made the announcement to students over the public address system.

School counselors, including those from the elementary and middle school, and two local clergy members, the Rev. Roy Southerland of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church and the Rev. Kathy Groff of Dundee United Methodist Church, were available for students who wanted to talk to an adult and express their feelings about what happened.

Dep. Sehl said the district was following the guidelines established by the school’s crisis committee. All after-school activities were cancelled, including the National Honor Society initiation that evening.

“We are a small enough school, we know everybody and it affects us,” said Superintendent of Schools Robert Black.

Assistant High School Principal Tom Williams said the administration sent three or four high school students up to the hospital to be with Duey Haddix.

“Duey’s going to need a lot of support from the kids,” said Mr. Williams.

The crash remains under investigation by the Traffic Services Division, along with Deputy Doug Arndt of the Road Patrol Division. Anyone who witnessed the crash, or with information pertaining to the investigation, is asked to call 734-240-7565 or 240-7560.

Tributes to Dan Haddix were placed near the tree where the car he was riding in crashed on Monday, May 10. The accident took place on Dixon Road just east of Alford Road. Dan was a freshman at Dundee High School.
