Veterans plan Memorial Day Parade in Dundee
Dundee Veterans Memorial Corporation will hold its annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 31, starting at 10 a.m.
The Dundee High School marching band will march from the high school down Ypsilanti Street. At the intersection of Ypsilanti and Main, the veterans organizations will join the band and all will march to the gazebo on the north side of the River Raisin.
All veterans or current service personnel are welcome to participate and should meet at the Dundee Veterans Hall, 418 Dunham St., at 9 a.m.
At the gazebo, the band will play the national anthem. Veterans group members Larry Brossia, Sr., Larry Cymbola and Wayne Rigel are speakers for the ceremony.
A wreath will be lowered into the river to honor those who lost their lives at sea. The “Navy Hymn” will be played during this remembrance. The firing squad will fire three shots, followed by the band playing “Taps.”
After the ceremony at the bridge and gazebo, the groups will proceed to Maple Grove Cemetery. Students from Dundee High School will give recitations of the “Gettysburg Address,” “General Logan’s Orders” and the poem, “In Flanders Field.”
This will be followed by volleys from the firing squad and the raising of the American flag.
The veterans then will proceed to the Azalia Cemetery for a brief ceremony.
The public is invited to attend a potluck luncheon at the Dundee Veterans Club, 418 Dunham St., following the Memorial Day observances.
