Road work scheduled in township

More roadwork is on the way, approved by the Dundee Township Board at its meeting held Tuesday, May 25.

The board talked about the Monroe County Road Commission contracts for Gloff and Dunbar Roads. Work on Dunbar Road includes removing berms and other harsh areas of the road. Three inches of stone are to be added to the road surface. The cost of this project would be $54,400.

On Gloff Road, the work is to be from the tracks to Ida West Road, adding three inches of stone. It was recommended that some berm work was needed as well. The work would clean out the sides of the road to allow for better water flow.

The portions that would be worked on would be from US-23 to Wells Road and also along Meanwell Road. However, the portion in between US-23 and Wells Road has a problem because one side of the road is in Summerfield Township. There was a question of whether or not the MCRC would clean both sides of the road.

Trustee Marilyn Larson said that it was impossible to clean one side of the road without cleaning the other. The board would have to check with Summerfield Township to see if they could work with the project as well.

Other topics covered at the meeting were the township-wide reappraisal, letters from the state asking for proof that homeowners actually lived in their homes, the library going for a millage, and preparations for Memorial Day.

Several members of the community have been receiving letters asking for proof that they actually live in the homes that they own. Though the letters caused concern to several homeowners, the township insists that the letters were sent because Monroe County didn’t take part in the county audit. Now the state is making sure that no one is cheating the homestead act. The most likely cause of this is that someone bought a home and didn’t rescind their old home.

The library is going for a millage, asking for higher taxes so that the library will receive more money. The township agreed to meet with the library and speak with them about the requested millage. They will meet at the township meeting on June 22 to see if they can approve of it. The next township board meeting is June 8.

The township has been keeping track of the preparations for the annual Memorial Day celebration. Flags have been set in the cemetery near veterans’ gravesites. However, plans to make the cemetery look the best it can for the Memorial Day celebration have been thwarted by the onslaught of rain the township has been receiving.
