| Mayfly Music Festival a success despite heat, bridge
Dundee's first-ever Mayfly Music Festival was deemed a success by its sponsoring organization, the Dundee Area Business Association (DABA). There were several other financial sponsors, including the Village of Dundee, Monroe County Tourism Bureau, Miller, Pepsi and others. The event was held Saturday, June 10 in Dundee. The was free live music all day long on a large professional stage in Wolverine Park, including an evening dance. There also were performances in the downtown bandstand and at the pancake breakfast in the morning. In addition to music, there were plenty of other attractions, including professional stunt kite flyers, carriage rides, trolley rides, pony rides, bungee jumping, rock climbing, inflatable attractions for youngsters, children's craft booths, plenty of food, and more. "I think it went very well," said event chairman Pete VanderAa. "We were pleased with everything that went on." There were hundreds of people coming and going all day long, visiting the different attractions, despite the heat, and traffic on the M-50 bridge, which is under construction. "The attendance was about 3,000 to 4,000. We were hoping for 5,000 to 7,000 but maybe next year," said Mr. VanderAa. "At about 7 to 8 p.m., a lot of people started to walk in." There were 200 children who went through just one of the children's craft booths, and 100 children took part in the I.D. program offered by AAA Michigan. "The Jaycees, Moose, and St. John all said they'd be back again, so it must have been a success for them, too," said Mr. VanderAa. The Jaycees ran the beer tent; the Moose had a broiled chicken dinner; and St. John Lutheran Church had a rib dinner. "We all feel good enough about it to go forward with plans for next year," said Mr. VanderAa. "We learned a lot. This was our first year. But, we didn't hear any negative comments. Next year, we'll concentrate the bigger musical acts for after 4 p.m. It was real hot during the day," he added. "By evening, people were ready to get out and sit in the grass and have a good time," Mr. VanderAa said. |
