Dundee man dies in grain elevator accident
A Dundee man was killed in a fatal farm-related accident at a Britton grain facility on Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004.

Gregory Dean Harlow, 49, of Dundee, died after apparently becoming entangled in a grain auger at the John Marion Inc. Grain Elevator at 8481 Britton Highway in Macon Township.

The Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the accident. Workers discovered the body. Emergency rescue personnel from the Ridgeway and Raisin Township Fire Departments initially responded to the call at about 3 p.m. and then called the Sheriff’s Department to investigate.

It appeared that Mr. Harlow had been shoveling corn from a pile into the auger, which is a piece of farm equipment that moves the grain to the center of the large bins.

John Marion Inc., headquartered in Saline, also owns the grain elevator in Dundee.

Mr. Harlow was an active member of the Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department for the past six years.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 11 at Dundee Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Southerland of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery, Dundee. Additionally, Dundee Volunteer Fire Department members held a bell ringing service on Friday, Sept. 10 at Cover Funeral Home, Dundee.

Mr. Harlow’s casket was carried to the cemetery on a Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department truck, which was draped in black, escorted by members of the department wearing their dress uniforms. His turnout gear was arranged on the back of the truck.

Also in the funeral procession were several Dundee fire vehicles, all draped in black. Emergency vehicles lined the street in town, and their personnel saluted as the procession went by. There was a flyover by LifeFlight, with which Mr. Harlow had trained.

The procession was led by a Monroe County Sheriff’s motorcycle, and ended with numerous vehicles from other Monroe County fire departments, and an emergency medical vehicle. All the emergency vehicles flashed their lights during the silent procession.

Mr. Harlow was born on Jan. 26, 1955 in Sullivan, Ind., the son of James H. and Jane Katherine (Cummins) Harlow. He married Susan Kay Spaulding on Feb. 16, 1974 at Dundee Assembly of God.

He was employed by John Marion Inc. Grain Elevator of Dundee. He previously had worked for Michigan State Regional Hospital, Ypsilanti, from 1975 until it closed in 1991.

He had been a firefighter for the Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department since 1998.

He attended Summerfield Schools, where he played high school sports.

He was a member of Dundee Baptist Church, where he was baptized. He enjoyed sports, the outdoors and auto racing, with his children.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Gregory II and B.J., both of Dundee; a daughter, Amy Jo Harlow of Dundee; a brother, James II of Whitmore Lake; four sisters, Edith Chapman of Huntsville, Ala., Jane Harlow of Greenville, Cynthia Sue Dumire of Grand Rapids and Madelynn Ziegler of Hudsonville; and a grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be made to the Gregory Harlow fund at the Dundee branch of United Bank & Trust.

Members of the Dundee Township Volunteer Fire Department honored one of their own on Saturday, Sept. 11 as they carried Greg Harlow’s casket to Oak Grove Cemetery aboard a fire truck.
