| Skateboarding causes problems in Dundee Dundee Village Council members discussed a problem with skateboarders at their Tuesday, Oct. 3 meeting. The youth ride their skateboards up on concrete steps and other features of both public and private property, and chip them up. In addition to chipping the steps at the Old Mill, Banquet Hall, and Village Council Chambers, other areas being destroyed include the steps which lead down from Riley Street to the sidewalk by M-50 at the bridge. "I saw some kid squirting soap out of a bottle on the steps," said Mr. Meehling. "Now when it rains, that's going to get wet and slippery and someone is going to get hurt." Council discussed creating an ordinance banning skateboarding. Trustee Vaughn Massingill said he would create a facility in one of the parks just for skateboarding "in a minute" if the Village could get out of the liability problem, but said that was unlikely. "This has never been brought up in the media," said Mr. Meehling. Mr. Meehling suggested that parents discuss the issue of skateboarding and respect for the property of others with their children who ride skateboards. Council members and residents present who said they had tried speaking about the problem with the skateboarders were treated very rudely by the youth. "Maybe if their parents knew what they were doing, they'd have a talk with them and put a stop to it," said Mr. Meehling. |
