Swimmers, football players race to raise scholarship funds

The “Ultimate Challenge” was held at the Dundee High School pool on Wednesday, Nov. 3, generating $300 in scholarship funds for seniors in this year’s swimming, diving, and football programs.
More than 40 participants suited up to dive, kick, or doggy-paddle their way across the pool in a series of races between the girls’ swimming and diving teams and the boys’ football team.
It was a friendly competition that inspired smiles and cheers from participants and the audience.
Kit Daniels, the girls’ swimming coach, observed that although there were several members of the football team who also compete on the boys’ swim team, most of the football players had little to no racing experience in the water. It was no surprise, then, when the girls bested the football team with a score of 127-56.
This was a good-natured competition, however, and the teams came out even in their degree of good sportsmanship.
“Everybody was excited and had fun on both sides,” said Daniels. “It takes a lot of guts for people to get out there and swim events they normally don’t swim.”
Three of this year’s seniors (one each from the swimming team, diving team and football team) will receive a portion of the proceeds in the form of scholarship money.
This was the first year for the Ultimate Challenge, but its success makes it likely to become an annual event.
